The Barranquilla Carnival is one of the biggest
in Latin America, full of vibrant culture and
vivid artistry. The event takes place 40 days
before the Holy Week, and celebrations are
spread across four days of intensive parties
and parades. In recent years the carnival has
attracted many tourists looking to experience
this cultural extravaganza.
The country’s diverse and wonderful
geography and ethnicity has led to equally
diverse and wonderful traditional cuisines
with flavours that reflect the vibrancy
of Colombian culture. Start with the
Antioquian favourite ‘Bandeja Paisa’ – a
strangely delicious compiled platter of
beans, rice, fried eggs, chorizo, pork rind
and guacamole.
In recent years, Colombia has worked hard
to become recognised as a safe holiday
destination. Whilst in previous decades
travellers would have been warned to
steer clear of the country that experienced
great conflict, this has now changed.
Areas such as Medellín and Cali are now
green zones according to The Foreign and
Commonwealth Office.
